Head to the parks
For a capital city, Rome has plenty of green space to explore. If you are lucky with the weather, then take the chance for the kids to let off some steam as they run around one of the various parks across the city. The Orange Garden (Parco Savello) for example, is a popular park in Rome. Situated on Aventine Hill, it offers an incredible view of the city and is full of bitter orange trees that are truly beautiful.
Villa Borghese is another popular city park. There are various museums and attractions within the park, making it perfect for an entire day of exploration, but the landscaped gardens themselves are lovely enough.
And when your little travelers are getting restless in the bustling city, take a day trip out to Aqueduct Park (Parco degli Acquedotti). Accessible by train, it is a vast open space framed by ancient Roman aqueducts. Pack and picnic and a frisbee or soccer ball, and spend the day enjoying some fresh air away from the crowded city streets.

Venture into the museums

Rome’s National Gallery of Modern Art is considered one of the best art museums in the whole of Italy. If you want to show your little ones some Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh then this is the right place to take them. There are over 5,000 pieces here, and kids get in free - there is even a lovely outdoor cafe to satisfy their post-art hunger!
Galleria Borghese, located within the aforementioned Villa Borghese, has plenty of older artwork on offer. If your kids are interested in history, this gallery is fantastic. Containing works by Caravaggio, Botticelli, Raphael and more, it truly is awe-inspiring. You need to book in advance but again, under-18s get in free!
The National Etruscan Museum has plenty of fascinating artifacts on display. They are pre-Roman and include pottery, jewelry, urns, sculptures and much more. There is a lot of variety here, sure to keep little eyes interested, and the mansion itself - as well as the gardens - is stunning. Children under 4 get in free, and for under-18s tickets cost under 5 euro.
Cycle down the Appian Way
If you are a family of keen cyclists, then you can hire bikes in Rome and cycle down the Appian Way. Create your own Rome tours with kids - they’ll love cycling along the cobbles, shaded by trees and surrounded by little pieces of history. There are plenty of points at which to stop and admire both nature and archaeology, and it’s a brilliant way to spend a few hours in the city. This is especially true if you have kids with a lot of energy to burn, or you just want to escape the crowds for a while!
